Toyota and Lexus have a solid commitment to the off-road lifestyle. We see new trims with an outdoor aesthetic and parts that boost capabilities beyond the standard variants. Toyota did it with the Tacoma Trailhunter, and now Lexus is doing it with the GX Overtrail.
Lexus is introducing two new trims with overland styling: Overtrail+ and Overtrail. These are part of the massive redesign for the GX line for the 2024 model year. The Overtrail trims have a strong focus on aesthetics. Four two-tone color options contrast primary paint colors against black roofs. Exterior upgrades include black fenders flares, an aluminum skidplate, and unique 18-inch wheels with 33-inch all-terrain tires.
The interior of the GX Overtrail combines one of two interior themes with olive-green suede. The standard GX can seat up to seven passengers, but the Overtrail models only have five seats.
Despite the different seating arrangements, the Overtrail is similar to the rest of its lineup. The twin-turbocharged, 3.4-liter V-6 engine is mated with a 10-speed auto and four-wheel drive. The GX standard is 349 horsepower and 479 pounds-feet. Overtrail can tow 8,000 pounds, just like the Premium and Premium+ trims. Overtrail is not expected to get a hybrid powertrain, but the GX will.
The GX Overtrail is equipped with Lexus’ Electronic-Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System. KDSS, in all its forms, allows you to fit larger stabilizer bars on your off-roader than average. The system can distinguish between articulation on the road, where extensive anti-roll bars benefit handling, and on-road cornering when not needed. After comparing the front and rear hydraulically, the old method would deactivate the anti-roll bar (or not). At the same time, the new system does this electronically.
The Overtrail is also equipped with an electronically locked rear differential. Despite its unique appearance, the Overtrail has the same 26-degree angle of approach as the rest. Breakover is a degree higher than the pack, at 24 degrees. Departure is in the middle between the trims, at 22 degrees.
